Cultural awareness and competencies are a thread woven through the culture and fabric of Leadership that Works. As a leader and advocate for expanding cultural competencies into the wider coach education field, our voice has been influential in making this a priority instead of a casual conversation.

Leadership that Works faculty member, Johnny Manzon-Santos, is leading the way as co-chair of the Association of Coach Training Organization’s (ACTO) Task Force on Cultural Awareness, Power and Privilege. The Task Force will present at the upcoming April 2014 ACTO conference during the opening 1/2 day session to promote and deepen a commitment to cultural awareness/competence, power and privilege in coach education. Participants will be primarily founders and faculty of coaching schools, the movers and shakers in coach education. Kudos to Johnny for his commitment and leadership in this initiative.

Here is a sampling of the work the Task Force has embraced:

  • Serving as a learning community and “laboratory” to explore how competencies can be adapted in local cultural contexts around the world.
  • Sharing concrete organizational practices around cultural awareness, power and privilege that schools can implement.
  • Making the case for how a more robust commitment to issues of cultural awareness, power and privilege can translate into increased recruitment of coaching students.
